Virginia Beach is set to make a splash this summer with the highly anticipated opening of the $350-million Atlantic Park development. Led by a team of experienced designers and construction professionals, the 10.2-acre project will feature a 2.7-acre surf lagoon, the first of its kind in North America.

The lagoon, designed by Spanish firm Wavegarden, is capable of generating 1,000 waves per hour, making it a must-visit destination for surfers and water enthusiasts. Along with the lagoon, the development will also include a 70,000-sq-ft entertainment venue, 309 residential units, over 100,000 sq ft of retail space, and two parking garages with a combined 1,469 spaces.

Funded through a public-private partnership, the project has brought together the city of Virginia Beach, the Virginia Beach Development Authority, Venture Realty Group, Pharrell Williams, W.M. Jordan, Bishard Development, and Priority Title/H20 Investments. With a strong vision and willingness to take risks, the partners are determined to create a unique and aspirational space for visitors and residents.

The design and construction process has not been without challenges, as the site spans four city blocks that were previously surface parking lots. Excavation work has revealed unforeseen utilities, contaminants, and even the remains of the original Virginia Beach Dome venue. However, the team has used advanced technology, including laser-scanning, to document and overcome these obstacles.

Dewatering the site for the lagoon proved to be a significant challenge, leading to an unexpected delay in the schedule. But with the use of local trades and careful planning, the team was able to complete the construction in just three months, well ahead of the estimated timeline.

Another highlight of the development is the entertainment venue, which features long open spans and can accommodate up to 5,000 guests. Operated by LiveNation, the venue has required extensive soundproofing measures to address potential noise concerns for residents. The team has also taken into consideration the nearby naval base and its regular air traffic, adding additional concrete to mitigate vibrations.

With a scheduled completion between April and December, the Atlantic Park development is on track to become a major attraction in Virginia Beach. The construction team is working diligently to meet the May 4 deadline for the venue’s opening, despite facing challenges such as limited laydown space and unpredictable weather.

The project also includes significant improvements to neighboring streets and infrastructure, with a focus on sustainability and accessibility. Once completed, Atlantic Park will offer visitors and residents a unique and vibrant experience, with a sense of discovery and plenty of entertainment options.
