New USGS Assessment Reveals National Water Shortage
The most recent National Water Availability Assessment conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has revealed a concerning trend of water scarcity across the country. Using a combination of data from 2010 to 2020, the assessment found that approximately 30 million people are living in communities with limited access to surface water compared to their water usage.
This groundbreaking assessment, which combines information on water quality, supply, and use, offers valuable insights into the delicate balance between water availability and demand. According to Bill Werkheiser, USGS associate director for water resources, the data gathered can inform policy decisions and help address concerns related to water resources.
To make this information easily accessible, USGS has created a Data Companion interactive website that will be regularly updated with historical data and future projections. This data, which fills in gaps in observational data, works alongside USGS’s Water Data for the Nation resource.
The findings of this assessment serve as a wake-up call for the nation to take action towards sustainable water management. With the help of this comprehensive data, we can work towards finding solutions to address the growing water shortage issue in the United States.
